Peanut Walnut Energy bars - $0.55

This one takes more preparation time at home. The first time, give yourself about an hour. After that, probably 15 or 20 minutes. It makes 10 energy bars for a total cost of $5.53 with 300 calories apiece. This is about half the cost of ones in a box. (To make 10 at a time add a zero to all the measurments  below.)

Unfortunately, this one has never made it to the trail. Just leave it out on the kitchen table and it quickly disappears. It would be a great thing to take for a covered dish.

Consider this a basic recipe to play around with. Any nut will do. Any fruit, chocolate chips, carob chips, dehydrated blueberries, or whatever seems good to you.
1. Put peanuts in a 1 gallon Ziploc bag and crumble with a rolling pin.
2. Put walnuts in a 1 gallon ziploc bag and crumble with a rolling pin

Set these aside until later.
3. Use a 2 quart sauce pot. Put sugar and Agave Nector in and heat just until they mix. You will need the bigger pot later.
4. Add peanut butter. While heating gently, mix with sugar and nector.
5. Remove from heat. Add all the other things and mix. If it gets difficult to stir, heat a little.

6. Put parchment paper on a pan or big plate that will fit in your freezer.
7. Press out mixture on the parchment paper so it's about as thick as an energy bar.
8. Freeze for 1/2 hour
9. Remove from freezer and let it sit for 1/2 hour.
10. Cut into pieces and put in small snack size bags for the trail.
